Careers in the engineering field remain unfamiliar for many youths from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. This historical challenge makes it difficult for organisations like TCTA to attract graduates from township schools into engineering and related
fields. In response, TCTA supported an initiative by the Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA) to inspire youth to pursue careers in the engineering and built environment sectors under the theme Developing Youth for the Future.

The career expo, held in Soweto on 24 October, brought young people from the community together to learn about career paths in construction. The keynote speaker, Deputy Minister for Higher Education and Training Buti Manamela, encouraged learners to pursue further education at universities or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges. “The one thing you can never wrong with in life is education,” he told the learners. “The many opportunities that exist out there are waiting for
you, and it is not true that there are no opportunities with TVET colleges. The economy needs skilled trades such as plumbing, bricklaying and electrical work, ensuring a steady incoming pipeline of talent for the future.”

Deputy Minister Manamela also encouraged stakeholders to expand their support beyond Gauteng, noting that many learners in rural areas often miss out. “Most organisations find it convenient to participate in initiatives that are in Gauteng while learners outside the province, especially in the villages, do not get such opportunities,” he said. Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Bernice Swarts gave closing remarks and encouraged learners to consider environmental sciences as a career. “It is an honour to be here today to briefly talk about the opportunities within the forestry, fisheries and the environment sector and the broader impact of climate change on the construction industry,” she said.

Deputy Minister Swarts pledged that the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment would maintain its collaboration with industry players in construction, engineering and the built environment. This partnership aims to create meaningful opportunities for youth, women and people with disabilities.

At the event, TCTA hosted an exhibition where learners could learn about TCTA’s bursaries and internships. Nomvula Mhlambi, Florence Ndhundhuma and Nangamso Magocoba managed the stand. This event united government departments, industry stakeholders and education groups in their commitment to fostering youth development in South Africa
